Yukon Public Legal Education Association

For more than 40 years the Yukon Public Legal Education Association, YPLEA, has provided legal education for Yukoners. For a lot of that time its logo (or, perhaps more appropriately, its mascot) was Legal ED, a series of raven-as-lawyer illustrations by local artist Chris Caldwell.

As we began the process of developing a new website for YPLEA, we also undertook the project of giving them a new logo to unify all of their materials. It was pretty evident that we needed to honour YPLEA’s history and keep a raven as a central element.

On the left side is a classic Chris Caldwell illustration of raven, who here is wearing the legal bowtie/double tie thing lawyers like and holding a gavel and a book. He looks cheerful, and is pointing at something like he's really excited that he might get to lay down some law. On the right side is a raven soaring through the sky, superimposed on a yellow sun. Below is YPLEA, with the full Yukon Public Legal Education Association name written out. It's a bit less fun for sure, but it does communicate an organization you can trust and has some gravitas to it.

Legal ED isn’t upset at all about getting to fly.

Legal ED hasn’t disappeared—some illustrations of him are proudly displayed in the YPLEA office and he appears on the website homepage.
